The usual food and drink of a person or animal
Whatever we eat is depicted as our diet – in the traditional sense of the word. Yet the Diet Industry has stolen the word and made it their own, which by rights includes all variations of cultural eating on the planet.
Calorie controlled diet
But what do we think of that? Everywhere we look we find the word, holed up within a mish-mash of low-calorie this diet-product that, consider the humble fizzy drink, as one prime example. When I was a Home Economics student back in 1991-93 Dr A as we affectionately called him, while conducting a food test in his chemical lab one day warned us off decaffeinated coffee due to the processes of taking the caffeine out being far more dangerous to health than risking the caffeine itself. And I’ve pretty much applied the same principle to any revamped products, it’s just common sense isn’t it?
Pastoral diets for health
Yet if you have a medical condition diagnosed sometimes you might be put on a special pastoral diet to aid the recovery process as a temporary measure.
An elderly relative was given a special dietary eating plan by the Dietitian at her hospital, due to a diagnosis for Diverticulitis. This was back in the 1980’s, and she stayed on it indefinitely until decades later she began having symptom-related episodes and after about half a dozen of these (that found her in hospital for days at a time) what stopped it was a return to normal eating.
She is old school and a doctor has to give her an order, before she’ll change anything, so there was a clear case of not listening to what her body needed nor the mindset to explore it.
Eating special diets to regain health
Marc David, the Nutritional Psychologist, recognizes that special eating plans be reserved for short bursts of post-illness recovery and the importance of keeping an eye out for any signals of where recovery has occurred.
After all we know our own bodies better than any medical health worker, at least we’re meant to. And sometimes this simply involves tuning in and some people find keeping a diary helps, at least when it comes to tracking symptoms, how often they occur, times of day/night, in order to raise awareness and connect the dots, there might be patterns which is all good information for you to take to your health practitioner.
Eating a healthily balanced diet
So be aware that next time you hear the word diet and consider that whatever eating regime you adhere to is a diet of sorts. But taking up any dietary plan without tuning into both your body and mind in order to gauge the impact they’re having is a key contributing factor as well.
Eating healthily will be different for everyone and where they’re at. If you have unstable eating patterns then I strongly advise to stop buying and eating the dietary products that flood the market year on year, they are just driven by a companies that see a window of opportunity but in all fairness have little or no interest in restoring you to good health.
Speaking from personal experience, it’s a great step forward just to eat consistently, throughout the day, starting with breakfast (even if that’s just a juice or a smoothie). This breaks the fast and kick-starts the metabolism.
Some handy recommendations
I recently did some work with a Colonic Hydrotherapy Practitioner, Kelly Sanguiseppe, at the Trinity Clinic in Folkestone who recommends going no longer than 4-hrs in-between meals, with snack breaks of fruit or (fresh) juice in between times if needed, and the best one of all eat between sunrise and sunset, as this ties in with the circadian body rhythms.
In conclusion we have to stop relying on outside gizmo’s and gadgets like the laughable Dieting Plate (which looks like something you’d feed an toddler on) because out-of-whack eating habits need to be addressed in other ways.
