Continuing with the Channel 5 countdown about the Fitness Industry, we go from 40 to 36.
40. Skimmed Milk
The common ties between skimmed milk and paint is Titanium Dioxide which is added to colour them white, otherwise skimmed milk would have a blue-ish tinge.
- Cottage cheese
- Coating on Paracetamol tablets
Think this one probably needs looking into in a post of it’s own, as that may sound scarier than it is. However what Wiki does reveal is that Titania (another of it’s names does contain E-number E171 which that link shows even more uses but concludes No Adverse Effects Are Known.
This harks back to the days of the Jane Fonda workout … and her catch-phrase no-pain-no-gain-no-guts-no-glory, encouraging us to really go for it. Mar (who I’ve had the privilege of meeting) reveals she worked for Jane Fonda in the 1980’s.
In hindsight it’s better understood that tuning into your own body, rather than your neighbour’s antics in the Fitness Studio, has far more importance and is much less likely to lead to injury and the physiotherapist’s clinic, because outdoing yourself can lead to:
- Torn ligaments
- Stress fractures
- Heart attack
Unfortunately this mantra still exists in some classes, but the current advice (and I know this one from personal experience) is to listen to your body first and foremost.
To differentiate between the two types of pain, Colin Gentry a Fitness Writer advises:
- Good Pain = you should feel a rising, burning sensation in the muscle you are working on
- Bad Pain = a lightening bold of pain shooting through the muscle, a tear, or a pain in the joints
38. Skipping Breakfast
The myth that missing breakfast is one less meal, and one less amount of food going into the system is contrary to what is really going on. Hear this:
Missing breakfast can make you FAT!
You need fuel in the body to go into the day, and the first food intake kick-starts the metabolism, so the body doesn’t actually start burning fat until this has happened.
Nutritional experts have referred to breakfast as the most important meal of the day, citing studies that find that people who skip breakfast are disproportionately likely to have problems with concentration, metabolism, and weight.
Other nutrition experts believe the claimed metabolic benefits are a common myth, noting the impact on cognition has been found among children, but not among adults, explaining the connection with increased weight is more likely to be a behavioural issue where people compensate their hunger with snacks and/or eating more later, which is therefore not inevitable.
Nutritional therapist, Stephanie Moore states that going without breakfast means the blood-sugar will drop to a critical point, the brain panics, because it needs lots of glucose, and this kick-starts the craving for high sugar, sweetest, most carb-laden foods. She goes on to say there’s nothing wrong with the occasional fry-up, I concur.
It shows there is a misconception that laxatives speed up the transition of food through the system. Because laxatives work on the Large Intestine, where water gets reabsorbed. By taking laxatives you lose water, as well as electrolytes, salts and unabsorbable things like fibre and this is the weight you would lose, but this wouldn’t necessarily affect fat loss, so won’t affect your body shape.
Over time laxative abuse can lead to an electrolyte imbalance, where the minerals go out of sync, which can result in heart problems. You can become dehydrated, which affects brain function and energy levels.
The colon gets used to the stimulus and becomes lazy, which can lead to colon cancer.
Colonic irrigation was mentioned as a no-no for weight loss and bloating. The doctors, stated that it gets rid of the friendly bacteria in your gut is a bad idea, and that there is a risk of perforating the bowel and that it can alter certain minerals which can lead to less potassium in the blood, which leads to it’s own problems.
Having had this treatment myself, with a very experienced and responsible hydro-therapist, who positively discourages people coming to her for weight loss. She encourages it more when accompanied by changing eating habits, when embarking on an alkaline eating programme. I had very positive experiences, so maybe I can get Kelly to do an interview sometime to flesh out the topic, as there isn’t that much information around about the health benefits, because it’s an embarrassing topic.
36. Personal Trainers Hidden Income
Because the Personal Training industry doesn’t pay as well as people think, and know this from a local (non-porn lol) friend who said what she’d earned working in market leading Health Clubs and I was surprised, considering all the body science they need to learn.
The programme went on to mention all the areas that Personal Trainers spill over into:
- Escort work
- Glamour modelling
Surprising eh! I don’t know about you but changing the body shape to the extent where the muscles are over-developed is a bit of a turn-off. But a healthy physique is more easily achievable form less extreme measures.
As the above low-down has clearly demonstrated tuning into your body is an incredibly important factor when it comes to achieving your long-term health goals, and some of the above highlights may take you closer to what you do want, as you get clearer about what you don’t.
