A quarter of the UK population is said to be clinically obese and the health industry is worth around £6b/annum, so are we following the right advice when it comes to getting and staying healthy?
Just after Christmas Channel 5 showed a programme which highlights 50-myths about diet and exercise, so let’s dig in to them and see what else we can find to back up or or squash the programmes assertions.
50. The Surprising Animal Proteins Allowed In Food
It seems that factory processed foods are not without their downsides when it comes to H&S and what the authorities pass as permissible in foodstuffs.
Here Dr Mercola shows that the FDA follow these guidelines for what is allowed into foods and it reads as one scary list.
Food experts explained how the stomach’s hydrochloric acid produced during the digestion process is highly toxic and will kill any nasties. There are lots of sites giving information about what quota is permissible by the Food Standards Agency, but when I go and search on their website, nothing comes back on the search criteria, which is a shame as we’d like to know what they’re about wouldn’t we?
Here are some statistics they bandied about, look away now if you’re squeamish about these things in peanut butter and tomato juice:
Peanut butter: an estimated 145-bugs and 5-rodent hairs
Tomato juice: 10=fly eggs or 5-fly eggs and 1-maggot
49. 7.6m Working Days Lost Due To Gym Related Back Injuries
What a phenomenal figure, 7.6m working days lost due to working out at the gym, but it makes sense when you think about people going to the gym and not focusing properly on their body while exercising, which leads to doing more exercise than the body can take (especially when it’s tired and this can be debilitating.
48. Bread Injected To Preserve Shelf Life
These days bread gets made in half an hour with partly fermented dough which is why people can feel really bloated after eating a slice. This is because it’s still fermenting in the gut due to the shortened process.
It’s pumped with fat, sugar and preservatives to increase it’s shelf life which means you can no longer gauge it’s age. along with a very high salt content.
And according to Dr Carl Heneghan, Director at The Centre Of Evidence Based Medicine, reducing the amount of salt that is pumped into bread could save around 7,000 strokes per year.
47. Sweating It Out At The Gym
This aspect highlights the importance of wiping any machines you use where you have to make physical contact with them, due to bacteria and fungus found in changing rooms, in showers and on gym equipment.
Professional athletes suggested a second towel for the purpose aside from the one you wipe your brow with. They stated the risks of infections caught around the gym might include colds, athletes foot, verrucas, stomach upsets and streptacoccal infections, even MRSA which can lead to boils, joint infections, even pneumonia.
They also highlighted the importance of washing your gym bag as well as your gym kit.
46. Bananas And Potassium 40
Because bananas contains high amounts of Potassium 40, it can send you radioactive if you eat too many, where 1-2 is okay and aids digestion, higher intakes conceal the risk of Hyperkalamia where symptom include nausea, kidney infections, irregular heartbeat and cardiac arrest.
