EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is the energy system that Gary Craig devised after he attended a TFT (Thought Field Therapy) course with Roger Callahan.
Roger Callahan, a psychotherapist, developed this system while working with a client who had a water phobia. He’d been working with her for 6-mths and tried every which way to reduce her anxieties around the issue. He’d been reading about Chinese Medicine and had reached his limits with her, so decided to implement some of that instead.
He started tapping with her, using the under-eye point and voila he couldn’t believe what happened, within no time at all she got out of the chair and insisted they go down to the local swimming area to test her fears. She was so insistent and he so wary, but just like a dog on a leash she was keen as mustard to get there and jump into the water, she’d suffered long enough 🙂 …
From this developed a technique, a book and the course Gary took, Callahan’s therapeutic approach changed from that moment.
EFT is a less complex version of TFT and both are based on a simplification of the energy meridians found in Chinese Medicine (as mentioned) found at the roots of Acupuncture. But both tapping systems are needle-free, instead these techniques rely on tapping with two fingers on the meridian points shown in the illustration above.
This unblocks the bodies energy system which brings about the required change. The two types of Tapping are similar but differ in that TFT refers strictly to the meridian system for specific areas, i.e. to address anxiety he prescribes the following:
- Tapping into the anxiety and scale it 0-10 where 10 is worst and 0 is impartial.
- Using two fingers tap five time under the eye
- Tap five times under the arm
- Tap five times on the collarbone
- Do the 9-Gamut procedure if necessary
Of course this was a decade or so ago and even EFT has changed since its origins, where lots of shortcuts have been introduced and other systems have been devised as add-on’s for a variety of reasons.
EFT on the other hand works similarly, but is more adaptable during the process, because we speak and allow the work to become intuitive and this is where the rubber really hits the road, in my opinion.
This allows for an immediate and sensitive response to a persons needs, the like of which are often unpredictable at the offset, a person comes along for one thing, but it often transpires that something completely different needs to be addressed, and EFT Tapping accommodates the switch effortlessly.
As you’d expect this subsequently cuts down on the number of sessions required.

The standards are monitored by AAMET under whom I’ve trained and become an advanced practitioner and trainer. Here at ABC Simple As I use these techniques as part of the basic recipe of most sessions, because it allows such easy access to the area to be addressed.
Since adding on the META-Medicine and the META-Healing Process, alongside my latest addition (Nov 2011) of the miHealth device, that I still integrate EFT and Matrix Reimprinting into the work because they are so great and easy and will switch between these five areas, as a session dictates.
What I now use this combination for is:
- Chronic disease
- Eating disorders
- Fears & phobias
- Mood swings
Whenever You Feel The Need
Although these techniques are easy enough, initially it is best to learn them from a trained practitioner in order to become familiar with just how much they can do for you. Subsequently, when you’re guided at the offset, you’ll become more of your own expert and able to apply it to other areas of your life whenever you feel stuck and need them.
